NPC Newsletter 50, February 2000 - Contents, Editorial and Club news

Note to the web edition - NPC newsletters placed on the website: As it is accessible potentially to anyone, certain items of purely internal club interest, and all members' addresses and phone numbers, have been removed. Links have been added to other web resources, where appropriate.

Editorial

Here is the first NPC newsletter of the final year of the millennium and century [Your webeditor, being pedantic rather than popularist, knows that the year 2000 is still part of the second Millennium. All further references to the Millennium throughout the web edition have been corrected]. It is also the 50th newsletter of the NPC new series (if you want to know why it is the 'new series' read the list of out-of-print publications).

As we approach the end of the old millennium, the NPC is still going strong. There is been a slight increase in membership over the 4 years that I have been Secretary. There seems to be a current trend away from caving activities but I am sure that this will swing back again.

On this note, I would have hoped for more caving articles but have received two excellent articles on winter climbing and tree-felling!

There are number of NPC activities (caving or non-caving) that have occurred recently which have failed to get a write-up. Will anyone be brave enough to write up Fat Neil's Ski Tour 2000 (including the last evening)? Will I get an article on diving in the Dordogne? If you can't manage a long article, please just send me a few sentences to publish as a 'news' type item.

Thanks to Andy Tharratt, Keith Mannion, Dani and Malcolm Bass for contributing to this newsletter.

Winter Dinner 2000

The Winter Dinner was held at the Whoop Hall Hotel, Kirby Lonsdale on Saturday 29 January and was enjoyed by 54 members and guests.

Iain Crossley gave an excellent talk on the NPC during the 2nd Millennium (and Essex girls). I don't think Iain realised that there were going to be two Essex girls in the audience.

Added entertainment was provided by the coach trip to and from the Whoop Hall by a slightly circuitous route.

We now look forward to the summer dinner on 10th June 2000. Book the date in your diary now and look for more details in the next newsletter.

Cottage News

Cottage Wardens

At the January committee meeting, Dewi Lloyd was co-opted as Cottage Warden (Maintenance). Nic Blundell's role is now that of Cottage Warden (Bookings). Therefore, if you want to book the cottage (or find out how many students there are likely to be cluttering up the place) contact Nic; but if you want to volunteer to do some maintenance (or make a useful and positive suggestion), contact Dewi.

Future Work

It is hoped to renovate the shower area in the near future. This will include re-laying the floor and retiling the walls.

There is now a list of work required around Greenclose. If you want a copy of this list, please contact Tim Palmer or Dewi Lloyd. Anyone wishing to carry out any item of work should coordinate this with Dewi.

The Northern Pennine Club Library

The Library has gone from strength to strength over the last three years. A major donation of material from Brian Heys sparked a renewal of interest in maintaining and preserving the extensive collection of caving periodicals and journals housed at Greenclose. Initially, these involved storing items in box files rather than giving the mice free reign. Subsequently, a completely new set of shelves were commissioned and built to replace the `metal box' and, where sets of publications are complete, a programme of binding has been commenced. Although quite expensive, binding complete sets preserves them for the foreseeable future and has significantly reduced the loss of items. Continuing donations from members, and another sizeable donation recently from Paul Atkinson, ensure that the Library stays as up-to-date as possible and remains as a source of information and inspiration for members present and future.

What of the future? The programme of binding will continue gradually as sets are completed. The current policy is to focus on completing sets produced by national organisations, northern caving clubs and the prestige university caving clubs. Apart from the regular national caving publications, there has been a notable reduction in the frequency of publication of printed material by most caving clubs over the past ten to fifteen years. Printed output will undoubtedly continue to wane due to cost, and may be replaced by electronic publications accessible via the Internet. Many clubs now have websites; indeed the N.P.C. is one of them. These can be successfully used to make out-of-print material available for posterity and to hold library catalogues and indices. Perhaps Greenclose should go on-line?

[The printed newsletter included a long list of items recently bound, not currently placed here on the website - a full library catalogue is expected to be produced in the not far distant future]

Wanted Items

The following are priority items to complete the gaps and allow binding to progress. There are many other wanted items for the library! The librarian will always gratefully receive donations of any books or journals for the library from members [Please remember the club in your will!]. Swaps can be traded with other club librarians for further missing items.
